John Woodhouse
John Woodhouse has been at the heart of Cherry Hinton community life since becoming a councillor in 1980. Representing the Cherry Hinton Ward, he dedicated himself to supporting residents of all ages, particularly focusing on youth activities and clubs for the elderly.
A talented entertainer, John performed in a semi-professional band during the 1960s and continued his passion for performance as a semi-professional entertainer in London throughout the 1970s. His flair for bringing joy to others is a hallmark of his community spirit.
In 1986, during his first term as Mayor of Cambridge, John founded the Mayor’s Day Out - a special seaside trip for local senior citizens. This cherished tradition has continued uninterrupted for decades, offering a highlight of the year for many elderly residents and local groups. The annual event is so beloved that it has become a feature in the local newspaper, celebrated for its enduring popularity and sense of community pride.
John served as Mayor twice, in 1986 - 1987 and again in 1989 - 1990, he remains an honorary councillor. Throughout his civic career and beyond, he has tirelessly championed local causes, securing a safer railway crossing in Cherry Hinton, establishing the Cherry Hinton village centre on Colville Road, which in turn prevented the loss of recreation ground land, and which Princess Diana accepted his invitation to come and open in 1986. His successful efforts to open the Cherry Hinton Health Centre and secure the site for the Spinney School demonstrate his commitment to improving local infrastructure and services.
A pillar of the community, John is also a familiar face at social events and gatherings, often leading quizzes and delighting audiences with his Elvis impersonations - and performances that have become a cherished local tradition. He continues to support the Cherry Hinton Old Boys Club and remains actively involved in local initiatives.
John’s enduring dedication to Cherry Hinton has made a lasting impact on countless lives, embodying the spirit of community, compassion, and unwavering service.
