A Newly Discovered Photograph Album of Victorian - Edwardian Cambridge and Cambridgeshire (c.1880–1910)
One of the pages from the old photograph album containing previously unpublished views of Victorian Cambridge & Cambridgeshire.
I am delighted to share the 50 photographs from a remarkable late Victorian photograph album that I purchased at an auction in Ely in 2026.
The album contains many unique, previously unpublished early photographs of Cambridge and locations across Cambridgeshire. To make them as useful as possible for researchers, local historians and anyone with an interest in the county's past, I have reproduced each photograph in two ways.
Firstly, I have included an image showing the photograph in situ within the original album, preserving its context and position. This is followed by a close-up crop of the individual photograph itself (otherwise completely unedited), allowing you to examine the details more clearly. You can click on each image to enlarge it and see it in close up.
Each photograph has been given its own reference number. While I have identified many of the locations, some remain uncertain. If you recognise a place, can help identify a building, date a photograph, or have any other information to add, I would be delighted to hear from you.
Please forgive the deliberately formal catalogue style used throughout this page. It has been adopted so that each photograph can be described consistently, accurately and in sufficient detail to allow future researchers to reference and cite the collection.
As photographs are identified, each one will also be added individually to the relevant page within this website, where it will become part of the wider Cambridgeshire archive. This will allow the collection to be integrated with related historical information and make it easier for future visitors and researchers to discover.

MBHPC is short for the Michelle Bullivant Historic Photograph Collection. Each photograph within the archive has been assigned a unique MBHPC reference number, providing a permanent catalogue reference for researchers and helping to preserve the collection for future generations.
Each photograph has been individually researched using surviving architecture, historic maps, contemporary photographs and modern field comparison. Locations are described as Confirmed where the evidence is conclusive, Probable where the available evidence strongly supports an identification, and Unidentified where insufficient evidence currently exists. This approach aims to preserve the integrity of the archive while allowing future discoveries to refine the catalogue.
These photographs are of a previously unpublished Victorian photograph album acquired at auction in Ely in 2026. It is one of a series documenting Cambridge and locations throughout Cambridgeshire.

The close framing concentrates on the architectural details, suggesting the photographer had an interest in recording individual features as well as wider views.
Notes: The photograph immediately follows a confirmed view of Ely Cathedral and is therefore thought likely to depict another feature within the cathedral precincts. However, the exact location has not yet been confirmed and further comparison with historic photographs and architectural plans may help identify the setting.

The presence of the covered wagon provides an evocative glimpse of the daily operation of the mill, illustrating the transport of grain or flour by horse-drawn vehicle during the late Victorian or Edwardian period.

The location has not yet been securely identified but is thought likely to be within central Cambridge owing to the surrounding roofscape.

Brick arches, and stone flooring suggest part of the service or circulation areas beneath the principal ranges of the building.
Notes: The photograph appears to record a lower-level architectural space rather than one of the principal courts. The descending staircase visible on the right suggests the photographer was standing on an intermediate landing or within a basement-level passage/room. Although the architecture is strongly reminiscent of Cambridge collegiate buildings, there are presently insufficient distinctive features to identify the exact location.

Notes: The photograph is thought likely to depict King's Mill, Cambridge, although the available architectural detail is insufficient for complete confirmation. The industrial appearance of the building, together with its waterside setting and twin chimneys, corresponds well with known views of King's Mill during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Gothic Market Fountain, erected in 1855, stands prominently at the centre of the square, surrounded by closely packed market stalls. Beyond are the commercial buildings lining the north side of Market Hill, while the spire of St Andrew the Great rises above the surrounding rooftops.
Notes: This photograph provides an exceptional documentary record of Cambridge Market Place at the turn of the twentieth century, preserving the arrangement of market stalls, commercial premises and the character of the city before the widespread introduction of motor traffic.
The elevated viewpoint appears to have been taken from the eastern side of Market Hill. On present evidence, the most likely location is an upper floor of 30 Market Hill (later occupied by Barrett & Sons), although the precise vantage point has not yet been conclusively established.

Horse-drawn carts, carriages and pedestrians move between rows of market stalls, while Victorian gas lamps and the cobbled surface of Market Hill are clearly visible. The image captures the everyday commercial activity of Cambridge during the late Victorian or Edwardian period.
Notes: Taken from the same elevated viewpoint as MBHPC-024, this photograph complements the preceding image by concentrating on the movement of people, horse-drawn vehicles and trading activity within the market.
The elevated viewpoint appears to have been from the eastern side of Market Hill. Current evidence suggests that the photographs were probably taken from an upper floor of 30 Market Hill, although this remains to be conclusively confirmed. Together, the two photographs provide an outstanding visual record of Cambridge's historic marketplace and preserve important evidence of its transport, commerce and urban environment at the beginning of the twentieth century.

The north side of Great St Mary's Church dominates the right-hand side of the image, with its arcaded elevation and tower clearly visible. Beyond the passage, the west elevation of the Senate House can be seen in the distance. The passage itself contains benches, young trees and gas lamps, while the façade of the building from which the photograph was taken frames the left-hand side of the composition.
Notes: This photograph forms part of a sequence of elevated views of Cambridge city centre, including MBHPC-024 and MBHPC-025. The viewpoint appears to have been from an upper floor of a building on the eastern side of Market Hill. Current evidence suggests that 30 Market Hill is the most likely location, although this has not yet been conclusively confirmed.
Together, these photographs provide an unusual series of elevated documentary views of Cambridge's historic commercial and civic centre, capturing both the marketplace and the surrounding streetscape during the late Victorian or Edwardian period.

Description: A view beneath a covered arcaded cloister, looking across the courtyard towards a range of classically detailed doorways and windows. Semi-circular arches supported by stone columns create a rhythmic architectural composition of light and shadow.
Notes: The architectural features closely resemble the cloisters of Nevile's Court, Trinity College, Cambridge, although the precise viewpoint has not yet been conclusively confirmed. The photograph forms part of a broader sequence of Trinity College and central Cambridge views contained within the album, strengthening the identification.
Identification should presently be regarded as probable pending comparison with historic photographs or inspection of the surviving architecture.
