Old Photograph Postcard from Hunstanton to Cambridge 1905
Photograph showing a rough sea at Hunstanton with the old pier in the background. c.1905
This amazing, very early photograph shows a ‘rough sea’ at Hunstanton with the old pier in the background. It has been printed as a postcard to send.
I can’t quite make out the signature of the artist on the front right corner - please do get in touch if you can make it out or know what the name is.
The Edward VII stamp gives the date of 1905. I would imagine it was rather difficult to get such a great action shot photograph with cameras at this date, exposure times being much longer.
Hunstanton Pier was opened on Easter Sunday 1870, a storm in January 1978 destroyed the pier.
On the reverse we can see that the postcard is sent to Mr Jolly, Cab Proprietor, Victoria Park, Chesterton Cambridge - the message reads:
Mrs Holt will be obliged if Mr Jolly will meet liceio? from Hunstanton arrive Cambridge about eight Sunday evening July 9th.
This appears to be a postcard sent to arrange a taxi - in the form of a horse cab - as telephones were not quite in universal use at this time - fancy having to send a postcard to arrange a taxi, if this is what is happening.
Cambridge Daily News - Friday 02 November 1906 (BNA)
Mr G Jolley lived in Girton Villa, Victoria Park (1913 Street Directory). On the 1939 England and Wales Register Mr George R Jolly, Cabman, is shown as living at 27 Victoria Park with his wife Ethel and one other family member.
