Centre for Material Culture Cambridge Stores

Cambridge Cold War Bunker

The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA) has recently completed its five-year Stores Move Project, during which nearly 320,000 objects were documented, photographed, and relocated from MAA’s off-site stores to the newly refurbished Centre for Material Culture (CMC). The CMC occupies the Grade I listed Cambridge Nuclear Bunker, a 1960s structure originally built to serve as the regional seat of government for the Eastern region in the event of a nuclear attack. Thankfully, it was never required for that purpose, and after many years of disuse, it has now been completely refitted to provide state-of-the-art museum storage facilities.
