Historical & Archaeological Investigations of Spring Head (Giants Grave) Cherry Hinton Cambridge 2003 G Clarke & M Bullivant
The report on the historical and archaeological investigations which I carried out with Graeme Clarke under the banner of my old company Active8 Archaeology, in 2003.
Summary:
On the 21/03/03 and the 22/03/03 Active8 Archaeology undertook evaluation by excavation of the site known as Spring Head, Cherry Hinton, Cambridge. This was to the request of St Bebe's School who conducted research into many aspects of the Spring Head. The dig comprised a trench into the bank on the south-eastern side of the spring and a trench into the flat ground on its north-western side. A test pit was also placed into the low mound to find out if it was an archaeological feature. The excavators under supervision were children from St Bebe's Inter-church Comprehensive School and members of the Thriplow Landscape Research Group. The excavation had a defined research aim. That was to evaluate the archaeological and historical potential of the site. Medieval finds were uncovered, consisting of tile, brick and clutch, with more abundant post-medieval material including building and domestic debris. In addition to this Active8 Archaeology undertook more extensive historical research with the aim of producing a clearer picture of how the spring site had been used and owned over the centuries. The information gained will help towards the production of a leaflet by the school children and a display board about the spring to be erected at the site.
