I had a lovely evening a couple of weeks ago at the Haddenham & Aldreth 1940’s pre-event to their amazing Blossoms & Bygones weekend which is coming up in May. The chapel in Aldreth was decked out in 1940’s gear, from banners and flags, clothes and furniture to a gramophone (working and playing great tunes) and original film projector and reels. The building was packed out for this lovely gathering and the evening kicked off with Mike Petty giving us a great talk about Cambs during WWII, I then followed with a brief stint about 1940’s makeup and style, finishing of the evening with a local chap giving his memories of the war - and of course there was a couple of lovely tea breaks with home made cake and bread and butter pudding. I can’t wait until the main event in May :)

I am pleased to announce that we have another new Cambridgeshire Community Archive Group (CCAN). The beautiful village of Elton in the very far north west of Cambs has joined our brilliant community archives network. They have a very good village society and have a wonderful heritage project on the go, with exciting events such as their very own ‘Big Dig’ and the involvement of the whole community and village school is something to be admired. We are really looking forward to seeing the Elton CCAN group additions to the CCAN website.

CCAN is Cambridgeshire’s online community archive, a place to see old pictures, photos, written and recorded memories, pod-casts and video clips along with living history as groups record their activities from today for the history of tomorrow. The CALH Spring Conference this year combines three major celebrations and anniversaries, it is the 60th Anniversary of the foundation of the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (Cambridgeshire Local History Council), it is the Bicentenary of foundation of the National Schools (National Society for the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church) in 1811 and last year the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Sawston Village College by Henry Morris, the Cambridgeshire county education secretary, takes place:

The day will begin with registration between 09.30 and 10.00, morning coffee will be served on arrival.

We have four expert speakers and two chairmen to host the proceedings for you, and the days programme will be as follows:

We will finish the day with afternoon tea, biscuits, and as tradition now dictates home made cake.

The day cost just £10.00 for CALH and Sawston Village History Society members, other Affiliated Society and Associated members pay just £12.50 and £15.00 for non-members, a preordered lunch is available for just £6.00.

The Stagecoach Citi 7 Bus leaves Emmanuel Street at 0842 and gets to Sawston at 0915.  There is a Bus returning to Cambridge at 1638 arriving at Drummer Street at 1740.  The buses are very frequent approximately every 10 minutes.

Have you researched issues of education

in your village or community?

Would you like to carry out some

research before April 2011?

 

We would like to include your work in the exhibition display which will accompany the presentations at the Educating the People Conference.

Any relevant topic will be welcome. It could be about your village school, but it could also be about other aspects of education, whether for children or adults. Has your village a nineteenth century village Reading Room? Have you a history of WEA or other adult education? Were there any initiatives to promote vocational training – anything from straw plaiting to metal work? Have you records of young people being indentured apprentices?  Are there personal records of individuals who won an education against the odds?

(If you would like to do some new research, check out the Victoria County History entry for your community, to see what has been done and what you might do. The staff at the County Record Office and the Cambridgeshire Collection will then be pleased to help you.)

If you have work already carried out, or if you would like to carry out such a project this spring and display the results, do let us know. We would like to plan for your display, so please complete and send us the details on the form.

Michellebullivant.com is now a partner in the new  BBC High Street History Project, along with Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) & Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN).

This is all to link in with the brilliant BBC One 6-part series Turn Back Time -The High Street, which started on 2nd November (you can catch up on BBC I-Player) which takes a group of shop keeping families back in time to experience live and work in shops on the High Street from Victorian Britain through to the 1970's.

We are all very excited to bring you the news about this new partnership, what it will mean to you in the communities around Cambridgeshire and how you can take part!

Some of things that you can get involved in:
 
1st-19th December 2010 Libraries around Cambridgeshire will be joining up with Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) to bring you interactive Memory Walls. You will be able to come along and add your memories of High Streets and shops in and around Cambridgeshire to the Memory Walls during the 1st -19th December. The Memory Walls will be up in the participating libraries and you can bring along things like your old pictures, written tales, old receipts and you can even just turn up and take part in recorded interviews! Keep an eye on this blog spot and My Diary Highlights for information and details of when events are being held and watch out for news and info on BBC Radio Cambs, the local newspapers, the BBC website and leaflets coming soon!

If you have memories, pictures etc. that you would like to give about any Cambridgeshire High Street or shops but cannot get to one of the libraries or have memories but don’t want to put them on a memory wall, just Contact Me or give me a ring on 07999 853907 and I will make alternative arrangements to collect your memories for you :)

Wow - we have been very busy! Lots of new photos, stories, memories and archives have been going on to the Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) and we've been busy working in partnership with the BBC for an exciting new project History on the High Street (which you can read more about in the blog above!) CCAN is a community archive and therefore is all about you - the people of Cambridgeshire - so why not get involved !

Last Saturday I went to our Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) public meeting where on of our great committee members - Tony Kirby - gave a fantastic talk all about transport in Cambs from 1900 - 2010. The meeting room was packed out and the talk was just brilliant :) It is so nice to see so many people interested and involved with their local history. At every CALH public meeting we have a speaker, refreshments, a book stall, a raffle and the committee (which includes some of the best local history contacts in the county) are about to answer questions and give advice. We also have a display giving out information, news and leaflets etc. So why not come along to our next meeting!
Saturday 4th December 2010 - the speaker will be Deana Hudson and she'll be giving us a talk entitled
The Mistress, her Maid and the Men in their Lives:

A humorous look at the mid 1850-1900s and ladies underwear and clothing.

You won't want to miss that !!! :)

Plus our new project where we have partnered with the BBC and the programme 'High Street History' is up and running - We inivite you to come along to our December meeting and bring along any memories, old pictures, old receipts etc. of High Streets and shop in and around Cambridgeshire. We will give you free advice on your archives and we'll be creating Memory Walls and all kinds of great things - so please do get involved :)

I'm really pleased to tell you that I am now Vice Chair of Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) overall managment committee :). For those of you that don't know about or haven't had a look at CCAN yet please do visit our fantastic site www.ccan.co.uk At our meeting we had a look at how many images alone had been uploaded to the site since we started about 3 years ago and we have an amazing amount! Well over 23000 images alone and that's not even counting our text, stories, articles and hotspots!!! All donated and shared by you! :)

CCAN is a fantastic resource for schools, researchers, family historians, local communities and people just like you to be able to share and get involved with the history of Cambridgeshire. If you would like to know more about how to get involved and start a group for your area, village or club or if you'd like to become a contributor and recieve free training and help on being part of this great network then please Contact Me and I will help you get started.

We have some really exciting plans for the future of CCAN and some great linked projects coming up. So watcch this space for developments! ;)
