CCAN - Cambs Community Archives Network 02/01/2011
We had our CCAN (Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network) executive committee meeting yesterday and some really positive things came out of it. CCAN has made such a big difference in moving forwards the digital capture and recording of archives in the county and we are looking forward to some great new CCAN groups joining us over the next few months. Our AGM is coming up to which all CCAN groups are invited to come along and if they wish, bring a display. The AGM will in the conference room of the Central Library Cambridge, which is on the third floor right next to the Cambridgeshire Collection and opposite the café. The AGM will start at 2pm, on Thursday 7th April 2011, and Chris Jakes from the Cambs Collection will be giving us a talk on archives – and you will get chance to network with other CCAN groups from across the county, catch up on CCAN news and show off some of the things your groups have been doing. Look forward to seeing you there!!! If you would like to know more about how to get involved with CCAN just use the Contact Me form, leave your name and number and I will get back to you. Add Comment Last Saturday I went to our Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) public meeting where on of our great committee members - Tony Kirby - gave a fantastic talk all about transport in Cambs from 1900 - 2010. The meeting room was packed out and the talk was just brilliant :) It is so nice to see so many people interested and involved with their local history. At every CALH public meeting we have a speaker, refreshments, a book stall, a raffle and the committee (which includes some of the best local history contacts in the county) are about to answer questions and give advice. We also have a display giving out information, news and leaflets etc. So why not come along to our next meeting! Saturday 4th December 2010 - the speaker will be Deana Hudson and she'll be giving us a talk entitled The Mistress, her Maid and the Men in their Lives: A humorous look at the mid 1850-1900s and ladies underwear and clothing. You won't want to miss that !!! :) Plus our new project where we have partnered with the BBC and the programme 'High Street History' is up and running - We inivite you to come along to our December meeting and bring along any memories, old pictures, old receipts etc. of High Streets and shop in and around Cambridgeshire. We will give you free advice on your archives and we'll be creating Memory Walls and all kinds of great things - so please do get involved :) Cherry Hinton Local History Society 11/12/2010
Great news for our Cherry Hinton Local History Society as we have received a grant to get some new equipment which includes a hearing loop system for the local Church Centre and a portable system which can be used by other groups too! Well done to Mo and the committee for all their hard work! I'm really pleased to tell you that I am now Vice Chair of Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) overall managment committee :). For those of you that don't know about or haven't had a look at CCAN yet please do visit our fantastic site www.ccan.co.uk At our meeting we had a look at how many images alone had been uploaded to the site since we started about 3 years ago and we have an amazing amount! Well over 23000 images alone and that's not even counting our text, stories, articles and hotspots!!! All donated and shared by you! :) CCAN is a fantastic resource for schools, researchers, family historians, local communities and people just like you to be able to share and get involved with the history of Cambridgeshire. If you would like to know more about how to get involved and start a group for your area, village or club or if you'd like to become a contributor and recieve free training and help on being part of this great network then please Contact Me and I will help you get started. I have just been to our lovely committee meeting for Cherry Hinton Local History Society. We always have a lot to go through but do it with great humour and nice cups of tea and coffee. I am lucky to be on so many committees that are a pleasure to attend. Cherry Hinton Local History Society has nearly been going for 30 years! We found some notes about the start of the group and had a look through them today. We found out that the society actually started on March 21st 1982, so we’ll have to have some celebrations for our 30th year which is 2011. We’ll get all the details we have about the history of the group up onto our Cherry Hinton Archives Group (CHCAN) website. If you would like more details about Cherry Hinton Local History Society and the talks, excursions and events we run please do take a look at our Facebook page! I've just been to the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History committee meeting held in Hildersham, Cambridge. We had a great meeting, always friendly and nice and today we had the added bonus of a lovely homemade cake being delivered by the secretaries mother. If all meetings were like this I think most people would be on some committee or other! As usual we covered a lot and got a hugh amount done. Next year will be our Diamond Jubilee year, so keep an eye out for information coming soon about our 2011 Conference, our celebration events, our AGM & Awards, excursions and jam packed programme of events and lectures! Yesterday I went along to the Cambridgeshire for Local History AGM & Awards held this year at Toft (as a county organisation we try to make sure we go all around the county in turn to have our events). It was a lovely afternoon, the beautiful weather helping of course. There were so many inspirational people to talk to and meet and it was fantastic seeing people get their awards. There will be more memories and info from the day posted on the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) posted on our website www.calh.org.uk so take a look there too. we then had our AGM where I was voted, along with others, to serve on the committee for another year. I am so pleased to be part of CALH, committee meetings are always fun and we get such a lot of worthwhile good work done. I have been with CALH for about 5 years now and am so lucky to have such a lovely bunch of like minded people and supportive friends to be working with :) 2011 is CALH's Diamond Jubilee year and there'll be lots going on for people to get involved with and to help us celebrate! |
