I am very pleased to announce that Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) and Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) are working in partnership with BBC learning to provide opportunies to experience archive film and running activies based around that. The first of our linked activities will take place at the Cambridgeshire History Fair on Saturday 17th September on Cherry Hinton Recreation Ground, where amoungst all the exciting stalls and re-enactors you will find the CALH marquee which will be showing archive film and holding memory collection and sharing. This is a FREE event, so why not come and see us!

Several of the CCAN groups are also holding film events with memory collection and refreshments, you can download the flyer above to find out more and visit an event near you.

The Reel History of Britain is a new, exciting 20 part series, in which Melvyn Bragg retells the fascinating stories of life in Britain from 1900 – 1970 through the archive collections of the British Film Institute and other National and Regional Film Archives.   Travelling across the UK, Melvyn meets the members of the public who appeared in the historic films featured in the series, and brings them face-to-face with their relatives with the help of a 1967 custom built vintage mobile cinema.  

Melvyn Bragg said: “At the turn of the last century one invention changed the way we recall our history forever – the motion camera. Thanks to Britain’s pioneering film-makers, we can still glimpse a world long gone.”

The BBC is also touring with it’s The Reel History of Britain Experience giving people the chance to learn more about their local history through film. The tour, which will visit Glasgow, Grimsby, Peterborough and Leicester, is free to attend, suitable for all ages and there is no need to book in advance.

Michellebullivant.com is now a partner in the new  BBC High Street History Project, along with Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) & Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN).

This is all to link in with the brilliant BBC One 6-part series Turn Back Time -The High Street, which started on 2nd November (you can catch up on BBC I-Player) which takes a group of shop keeping families back in time to experience live and work in shops on the High Street from Victorian Britain through to the 1970's.

We are all very excited to bring you the news about this new partnership, what it will mean to you in the communities around Cambridgeshire and how you can take part!

Some of things that you can get involved in:
 
1st-19th December 2010 Libraries around Cambridgeshire will be joining up with Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) to bring you interactive Memory Walls. You will be able to come along and add your memories of High Streets and shops in and around Cambridgeshire to the Memory Walls during the 1st -19th December. The Memory Walls will be up in the participating libraries and you can bring along things like your old pictures, written tales, old receipts and you can even just turn up and take part in recorded interviews! Keep an eye on this blog spot and My Diary Highlights for information and details of when events are being held and watch out for news and info on BBC Radio Cambs, the local newspapers, the BBC website and leaflets coming soon!

If you have memories, pictures etc. that you would like to give about any Cambridgeshire High Street or shops but cannot get to one of the libraries or have memories but don’t want to put them on a memory wall, just Contact Me or give me a ring on 07999 853907 and I will make alternative arrangements to collect your memories for you :)

Wow - we have been very busy! Lots of new photos, stories, memories and archives have been going on to the Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN) and we've been busy working in partnership with the BBC for an exciting new project History on the High Street (which you can read more about in the blog above!) Many exciting things happening at CCAN and as of January our regular public workshops will start so that you can all come along and find out more - Watch this blog spot and My Diary Highlights for details coming soon :)

There are many ways that you can contribute to the Cambridgeshire Community Archives Network (CCAN).

CCAN is a community archive and therefore is all about you - the people of Cambridgeshire - so why not get involved !

Last Saturday I went to our Cambridgeshire Association for Local History (CALH) public meeting where on of our great committee members - Tony Kirby - gave a fantastic talk all about transport in Cambs from 1900 - 2010. The meeting room was packed out and the talk was just brilliant :) It is so nice to see so many people interested and involved with their local history. At every CALH public meeting we have a speaker, refreshments, a book stall, a raffle and the committee (which includes some of the best local history contacts in the county) are about to answer questions and give advice. We also have a display giving out information, news and leaflets etc. So why not come along to our next meeting!

The Mistress, her Maid and the Men in their Lives:

A humorous look at the mid 1850-1900s and ladies underwear and clothing.

You won't want to miss that !!! :)

Plus our new project where we have partnered with the BBC and the programme 'High Street History' is up and running - We inivite you to come along to our December meeting and bring along any memories, old pictures, old receipts etc. of High Streets and shop in and around Cambridgeshire. We will give you free advice on your archives and we'll be creating Memory Walls and all kinds of great things - so please do get involved :)

Well on the family front things are mad as always, my 16 yr old son came home with his eyebrow pierced the other night - I wouldn't have minded if he had had it done at a proper piercing studio in a year or two but he had decided that it was fine to let his 15 yr old mate do it instead...joy! Luckily it doesn't look like it has got infected. He is doing really really well at college and he's a happy kid so I am very proud :) Daughter no.1 is looking for work and might be doing something with the Princes Trust which will be cool, youngest daughter is off for the weekend with her dad and will be home on Sunday eve - I've been reading her Harry Potter, she's just the right age now to grow up with the books. We finished the first one and then watched the film for that one, we're now on to Chamber of Secrets. I make no apologies of being a mega Harry Potter fan - I once drove all the way to Edinburgh just to see J K Rowling and be at the launch of one of the books and I can't begin to tell you the amount of Harry Potter stuff I have boxed away!

Granny is still doing ok, she is at home and everyone keeps going round in shifts so she isn't left alone. I really miss granny because I have had a stupid cough and cold all week so I daren't go near granny in case she catches it, so I'm just waiting for it to go then I'll be able to spend some time with her.

Puppy has learnt the new trick of getting the end of the toilet roll and pulling it around the house! She is so cheeky and sweet, I am so glad we got her I have really missed having a dog around. We always had dogs when I was little and we used to go to dog shows and have little puppies and it was so lovely.


Even with my silly cold I have had a busy week, I had a great meeting with BBC history and am getting involved with some brilliant, exciting projects with them - news about that soon ;)


I am off to do my Poison and Powder talk to Cambridge Family History Society this afternoon - I hope my tickly cough isn't going to be too bad!
